How to Buy Custom Furniture Online With Confidence
Let's start with the part most companies leave until checkout.
Custom upholstery isn't returnable because you changed your mind. That's true of us. It's also true of essentially every premium retailer selling made-to-order furniture — check their return policy and you'll find custom orders excluded.
It isn't a Nantuckit limitation. It's what "made specifically for you" means. Nobody keeps a warehouse of returned sofas in one person's fabric choice.
So the useful question isn't whether you can send it back. The question is: how much help do you get before it's built?
That's what this guide is about — including the parts where buying online is genuinely worse than buying in a showroom.
First, the honest disadvantage
You can't sit on it.
That's a real thing to give up. For some people it should be the deciding factor, and we'd rather say so than have you discover it after ordering.
What we'd offer in exchange for that trade:
A showroom floor model is upholstered in a fabric you're probably not ordering, sitting under retail lighting that isn't yours, in a room proportioned to nothing like your living room. It tells you something about comfort. It tells you almost nothing about how the piece will look in your house.
Buying online without a showroom means you can test the actual fabric in your actual light, see the furniture and fabric you’re considering together in a mock-up, and take several weeks rather than twenty minutes to decide.
Neither is complete. They're different information. Knowing which you're getting matters more than which you choose.
Step 1: Get the real fabric in your hands
This is non-negotiable
Order up to nine from us at no cost. When they arrive:
Look at them in morning and evening light. Put them flat next to your rug, not held up in the air. Drape one over the arm of your current sofa so you're seeing texture at furniture scale. And live with them for a few days — the one you love instantly isn't always the one you love on Thursday.
If none of them work, tell us what was wrong. That's not a failed round; it's the most useful information we've gotten. Most people who order a second set end up buying.
Step 2: Know the exact price before you commit
Not a range. The number.
Our online website estimator lets you configure what you're considering and see the price privately, without a salesperson and without giving us your email. Use it as many times as you like.
Two things to watch for anywhere you shop: whether the advertised price is the base fabric grade (it usually is), and whether delivery, tax and any membership fee are included in what you're comparing.
Step 3: Confirm the dimensions properly
More online furniture disappointment comes from size than from fabric.
Measure the room, not the wall. Include the traffic path. A sofa that fits the wall but blocks the walkway is a daily annoyance.
Tape it out on the floor. Painter's tape, actual dimensions. Live with the outline for a day. This takes ten minutes and prevents the most expensive mistake in furniture.
Check the path in. Doorways, stairwells, tight corners, elevators. Tell us if anything is unusual and we'll work out whether it's a problem before it's a problem.
Ask about seat depth specifically. Width is what everyone asks about; seat depth is what determines whether you sit up or sink in, and whether it works for everyone in your house. A 21-inch seat and a 24-inch seat are completely different pieces of furniture.

Step 4: See it before you decide
This is the step most people skip and the one that resolves the most doubt.
Tell us which Nantuckit furniture piece and fabric you're considering. We'll create a FREE AI mock-up so you can see how that combination comes together before you order.
It costs nothing, and there's no obligation. It's also the point at which many people realize the sectional they were sure about is too much for the room, or that the blue they were nervous about is exactly right.
Step 5: Talk to an actual person
Every question you have has an answer, and most of them take about four minutes.
When someone requests swatches from us, I call a few days later. Not to sell anything — to hear what you're working on. What the room is for, who's in it, what's not working now, what you're stuck on.
Twenty-one years in, I'm still better at narrowing fabric over the phone than any website has managed to be.
Step 6: Review the complete invoice before anything is built
Nothing goes into production until you've seen and approved the exact specification — every piece, every fabric, every option, the total, and the delivery terms.
That's your last checkpoint, and it should be a real one. Read it carefully. If something is wrong, that's the moment to catch it.

What happens after you order
Production takes approximately 8 to 12 weeks. Your furniture is built to order in North Carolina. We can't guarantee a specific delivery date, and we'd rather tell you that than promise one and miss it.
Delivery is white glove. Two people bring it into the room you want it in, unpack it, set it up, and take the packaging with them. Not a box on your porch.
And covers can be replaced later — for current and most past collections. Which is genuinely why this company exists: in 1997 my wife bought a slipcovered sofa from a well-known national retailer and, three years later, was told replacement covers could no longer be purchased at all. The frame was perfect. It had simply become disposable.
How to evaluate any online furniture company
Take these questions anywhere, including here:
Are swatches offered? Can you get an exact price without talking to a salesperson? Can they show you a mock-up of the furniture and fabric you’re considering? Can you reach a human who knows the product? Do they tell you what not to buy? Will replacement covers exist in five years? Do they clearly state the return policy on custom orders? And how long have they actually been doing this?
A company confident in its answers gives them quickly.

We can't make it returnable. We can make it very unlikely you'd want to.
Start with the fabric. Everything else follows from there, and there's no cost and no obligation at any point until you approve an invoice.
Common questions
Is custom furniture returnable? Generally no — from us or from anyone selling made-to-order upholstery. It's custom-made for you.
What if the color looks different than expected? That's exactly what free swatches prevent. See the real fabric in your own light before ordering, not on a screen.
Can I talk to someone before I order? Yes. Reply to any email or call. We'd rather spend fifteen minutes with you now than have you order something you're uncertain about.
How long does it take? Approximately 8 to 12 weeks from order, since nothing is built until you order it.
